New Laws in Effect for July 1

July 1 is usually a time for new laws to take effect, and this year is no different here in Georgia.

With July 1 comes new laws in Georgia, and around the nation. Here's a short list of the new things that you should be aware of and who it will affect, according to various news reports, including the Associated Press.

1. The Unemployed: Benefits will be reduced from 26 weeks to a sliding scale of between 14 and 20 weeks, depending on the unemployment rate.

2. Welfare Recipients: Georgia's Department of Human Services must create paid for by welfare applicants themselves. Although those who test negative can seek reimbursement, the law is likely to meet more challenges.

3. Teachers: Following a massive cheating scandal in Atlanta Public Schools, teachers found guilty of cheating on standardized tests will lose their bonuses.

4. Liquor Drinkers: Liquor tastings will now be allowed, but it will be limited to half an ounce per person, per day. Distilleries also can host promotional or educational tastings.

5. Volunteers: Now all volunteers who work with children will be required to report suspected child abuse. People employed by or volunteering at a business or organization that provides services to children are subject to the mandated reporting requirements.
