Obama Announces Death of Osama bin Laden

Nearly 10 years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Osama bin Laden has been killed.

Osama bin Laden, the most wanted man in the world, has been killed in Pakistan.

"Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida and a terrorist who's responsible  for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children," President Barrack Obama began his address to the nation, which began around 11:35 p.m. Sunday. (See his complete speech on www.whitehouse.gov.)

The president said the operation began after receiving a tip in August, and that it culminated today in a targeted operation under his direction. No Americans were harmed, Obama said, and that after a fire fight U.S. forces took possession of bin Laden's body. The president added that the U.S. forces that killed bin Laden led with "extraordinary courage."
