Rabies Alert Hits Close to Home

Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement is issuing a rabies alert after a cat tested positive in the state's laboratory.

The cat was picked up from Carlton Cove Court in the unincorporated area of Loganville. The increased concern of neighbors was the close proximity to two J.C. Magill Elementary and Grace Snell Middle School, which are also near Snellville.

Officer R. Weldon with the county welfare and enforcement team said the cat was a domestic cat that spent time outside and returned showing symptoms of the rabies. The state laboratory has now confirmed the animal was infected.

Officials suggest that if you or anyone you know has been bitten or scratched by any stray animal, or if you know of anyone handling this animal please call the Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Office at 770.339.3200 ext. 5576.

Rabid animals may act tame. They may also display strange or unusual behavior. They may act aggressive, avoid food and water, foam at the mouth, or have trouble moving. Stay away from any unknown animals, especially wildlife. Report any animal acting unusual to Gwinnett County Police Animal Welfare and Enforcement at 770.513.5100.

• Do not leave garbage or pet food outside. Food left out may attract wild or stray animals

• Do not keep wild animals like raccoons, skunks, foxes, and coyotes as pets. It is dangerous and also illegal
