Speak Out: What Do You Think About Required Gun Ownership

The City of Nelson is the second Georgia city to require every head of household to own a gun and ammunition. Should Snellville be next?

While there is no talk of requiring gun ownership in Snellville, the city of Nelson, Ga., now requires that "every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition."

The measure was voted on and passed 5-0 on April 1 (and no, it's not an April Fools' joke) and is called the Family Protection Ordinance.

Nelson is now the second city in Georgia to pass this type of gun law; Kennesaw has had one on the books since 1982.

Residents can opt out if it is against their beliefs or religion, or if they have physical or mental disabilities. "Paupers" and felons are also exempt, according to CNN.

According to MSNBC, Nelson's councilman Duane Cronic said that “some people have security systems, some people don’t, but they put those signs up. I really felt like this ordinance was a security sign for our city.”
