Study: Long Commute for Snellville Workers

City ranks way down the scale when it comes to how many minutes Snellville residents spend in their daily commute to work and back.

Despite there being very direct and easy routes to Snellville, a recent study says Snellville residents don't fare as well as others for smooth traffic commutes.

An article on The Business Journals Digital Network refers to a study in which small cities were ranked based on the ease of commutes. Altus, Okla., where more than 80 percent of workers can get home in less than 15 minutes, came out on top.

(Small cities were determined as those with populations of 10,000 to 50,000 people.)

That same study found that in Snellville, only 15 percent of the city's workforce can make it from their home to their place of work in less than 15 minutes.

While 1.5 percent of the workers in Altus face a daily commute of 45 minutes or more, almost 34 percent of those traveling from Snellville to work sit in traffic for that length of time.

The study was compiled based on commuting data from the five-year version of the 2009 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. Cities were awarded points for all commuters who drive less than 30 minutes to work and losing points for all workers above that figure.

Snellville's score was a dismal -19.332, ranking it 2,912th on the list of 3,012 cities.

It's worth noting though, that many commuters who do not live in Snellville use Snellville roads (Highway 78 and Scenic Highway) to get to and from. The addition of all those people is bound to create alot of traffic.
