Yellow River Pedestrian Bridge Grand Opening Set for June 10

Residents are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the Yellow River Bridge, a project that has been in the works for years.

On June 10, Gwinnett County officials and dignitaries will gather at the Yellow River Pedestrian Bridge to celebrate its grand opening. Residents are welcome to attend as well.

The bridge, which is at the intersection of Highway 78 and Lake Lucerne, has been in the works since 2005, according to Wayne Hill, interim Executive Director at Evermore Community Improvement District.

The bridge is part of the Highway 78 improvements, but also plays a significant role in plans for future greenspace development.

In a study conducted for the National Homebuilders Association, walking and bike paths are viewed as extremely important by 74% of buyers throughout the US.  The county has been actively building and planning for sidewalks, parks, bike paths and parks for years.

According to the Gwinnett County website, the amount of open space and parkland in the county has grown from just over 1,800 acres to over 7,200 acres since 1996.

“We are hoping the bridge will play a role in the Gwinnett greenway that is slated for the Yellow River area,” Hill said.  “We have a map that has trails that are projected for the future as all that develops over the next few years.”

The Yellow River Pedestrian Bridge will connect indirectly to Collins Hill Park by a greenway in the future, although it may be a few years away.

A greenway is a “linear corridor of greenspace that frequently contains trails for recreational use and non-motorized transportation,” according to Gwinnett’s Open Space and Greenway Master Plan.

The stated goals of the Greenspace Master Plan are to increase recreation opportunities, protect and improve water quality, increase connectivity via a system of greenway trails, reduce environmental impacts of development, and enhance aesthetics throughout the county.

The ribbon cutting for the Yellow River Pedestrian Bridge will be held at 10am, followed by refreshments at nearby Alcove Coffee on Lake Lucerne. If you plan to attend, send your RSVP to asoesbe@evermorecid.org.
