Amended AYP Status for Gwinnett County Schools

Now, some 83 percent of schools in the county have met Adequate Yearly Progress in the past school year.

An amended report indicates 82.5 percent of Gwinnett County schools made Adequate Yearly Progress, also known as AYP.

The Georgia Department of Education recently released its amended 2011 AYP Reports, which include the appeals, summer graduates, and summer retest scores for CRCT, CRCT-M, and GHSGT.

For Gwinnett County Public Schools, the final report indicates that four schools previously not making AYP have now met state standards. The Gwinnett schools that have made AYP after the summer recalculations are: Creekland Middle, McConnell Middle, Duluth High, and Ferguson Elementary.

This means that in a year when state standards rose, 82.5 percent of Gwinnett County’s public schools met the state’s accountability goals. Of 126 Gwinnett schools required to meet state standards, 104 made AYP for the 2010-11 school year.

Of Gwinnett’s 22 schools that did not make AYP in 2010-2011, only four — Berkmar High, Phoenix High, Sweetwater Middle and Hopkins Elementary — faced consequences because they had not made AYP the previous year.

Berkmar High is considered to be in corrective action and is offering Public School Choice (student transfers) and Title 1 funded (Supplemental Educational Services).

Phoenix High is considered to be in State Directed Status. As an open campus facility, its students have choice through the open campus option. The school also provides locally funded tutoring.

Sweetwater Middle is offering Public School Choice, and Hopkins Elementary is offering Public School Choice.

In Snellville, and schools did not make AYP. However, there were no immediate consequences at these schools allowing parents to choice another public educational facility for their children to attend.
