Brookwood Boys Advance to State Tournament

Despite a 9-16 record, Brookwood's boys basketball team secure big win in Region 8-AAAAA against Dacula, 66-55.

Brookwood jumped out early and held off Dacula in a 66-55 win in the first round of the Region 8-AAAAA boys basketball tournament at Parkview High in Lilburn.

The Broncos used a balanced offensive attack, led by Malcolm Hannah’s 18 points. Jerome Cole added 17, Michael Gouge 15 and Thomas Higginbotham 14.

Brookwood’s boys jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first period and built the lead to 27-19 by halftime.

With the win, Brookwood advances to the state tournament despite a 9-16 record. Brookwood meets Archer at 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

In other games involving Snellville teams Wednesday, South Gwinnett’s girls beat Dacula 59-40, while Shiloh’s boys lost to Berkmar 62-57.

South Gwinnett girls 59, Dacula 40: South Gwinnett trailed 14-11 after the first period, but made 13 free throws in the second quarter to take command of the game.

The Lady Comets built a 32-24 halftime lead, then coasted to the 19-point win.

Kiara Baker had 26 points, including 19 in the second half, to lead the Lady Comets. Samantha McCombs had nine points in the second period as South outscored Dacula 21-10 to take a big lead.

Dacula scored only six points in the third period, and South then cruised to its 16th victory of the season.

Bri Daniel led Dacula with 9 points. The Lady Falcons finish their season 5-21 while South improved to 16-10 and will play arch-rival and top-ranked Brookwood Friday in the region semifinals.

Berkmar boys 62, Shiloh 57: Shiloh came back from an 11-point deficit, but fell short in a first-round loss to the Patriots.

Shiloh trailed 24-13 in the second quarter and 26-16 at halftime, but fought back to tie the game at 46-46 and then again at 55-55 with 1:39 left to play on Jordan Gaither’s basket.

Stedmon Lemons gave the Generals their only lead at 57-56 with less than a minute left, but Berkmar’s Yonel Brown made a basket for a 58-57 Patriots lead, then Ivan Holden scored on a steal and layup to make it 60-57 with nine seconds left.

When Shiloh missed a 3-pointer, Berkmar’s Devan Campbell was fouled with 3.1 seconds left and made both free throws to seal the victory.

Berkmar improved to 18-7 while Shiloh ended its season 12-13.
