Brookwood Cluster Foundation Awards Over $22,000 to Local Schools

On March 19, the Brookwood Cluster Foundation awarded over $22,000 to schools within the Brookwood cluster. 

The foundation is made up of dozens of parents, business owners and teachers in the community dedicated to maintaining the "tradition of excellence" the district is known for.

"It's our job as a foundation to support the school," said foundation member Ron Weber during the ceremony at Summit Chase Country Club. 

The foundation provides "private funding of innovative programs and creative teaching methods to enhance the learning opportunities for the students of Brookwood Cluster Schools," according to their website. 

2013 Grants Awarded

• Craig, Brookwood, Gwin Oaks and R.D. Head Elementary received a trip for teachers and administrators to a Literacy Workshop taught by Lucy Calkins, worth $11,733.60. The workshop focused on the implementation of literacy practices in grades K-5.
• Five Forks Middle received a $3,000 grant to purchase robot kits and software for Robotics.
• Crews Middle received a grant for a Smart Podium Interactive Display for Accellerated Math classrooms ($1,631), Junior Scholastic Magazines for 7th grade Social Studies and Language Arts ($330), 20 book titles, 6 copies of each title for Literacy Circles Groups ($840), Upgraded software for the Business and Computer Science Department and Social Studies ($209), and the creation of a 7th grade "reading room" including books, furniture, posters and indoor plants ($1,582.77). 
• Brookwood High School received a grant for a pollinator garden ($1,437.37), a Shakespeare Workshop with hands on training ($725) and studio lights for graphic design and digital photography ($1,385.52).

Teachers, principals and local dignitaries, including the Gwinnett County School Board's Bob McClure and Snellville Mayor Kelly Kautz, were in attendance.
