Brookwood High Senior Shares STAR Student Honor

A Brookwood High School and Norcross High School student recently were named the district's STAR students.

Two Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) students earned the title of 2012
STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Students representing Gwinnett County public schools and Gwinnett County private schools.

Michael Song of Brookwood High and Andrew Alin of Norcross High both recently were announced as the Gwinnett County winners during the annual STAR Student and Teacher Luncheon on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce in Duluth. The event celebrates all local school STAR students from each GCPS high school, as well as the top student from Buford High (Buford City Schools) and Gwinnett private high schools.

Each STAR student is the senior in the top 10 percent of his or her class with the highest SAT score. The Brookwood High and Norcross High winners earned the title for having the highest SAT scores among the districtwide class of 2012.

As part of the recognition, each STAR student selects a teacher as the educator who had a strong influence on his/her academic career. Michael Song selected Brookwood High mathematics teacher Chris Michael, while Andrew Alin picked Norcross High social studies teacher James Glenn, who was also honored in 2010 as Gwinnett County’s 2010 High School Teacher of the Year.

“We are very proud of our STAR students and teachers. They are indeed stars, representing the best and brightest in our schools,” said Gale Hey, GCPS’ deputy superintendent of teaching and learning. “Academically these students have excelled in our schools and are prepared for the future.

"Part of that preparation was provided by the stellar teachers we also recognize today. We appreciate all that they do day in and day out for our students.”

As Gwinnett STAR students, Michael and Andrew will move on to the region competition where they and their STAR teachers will be recognized and compete for the regional title. Joining them will be Buford City Schools’ STAR Student Cassie Oliver and her selected STAR Teacher Lisa Cole.

In the spring, regional winners will vie for the honor of being named Georgia’s 2012 STAR Student and Teacher. In 2011, Brookwood High’s Akshaya Suresh and her selected STAR Teacher Mr. Dana Kling of Brookwood High, won the regional title and were later named Georgia STAR Student and Teacher runner-up.
