Across the district, there are 156,959 students enrolled in Gwinnett County school on August 9. That's higher than this time last year, which was 156,062. Still, the count is about 5,500 students below the forecast.

Last year, the school system gained 5,068 students from the first to the final count, Jorge Quintana, director of media relations for GCPS, reported Thursday. Based on these preliminary numbers, GCPS planners expect the school system's post-Labor Day enrollment to be very close to the forecast, he said.

The school system expects 162,459 by the post-Labor Day count, which would be higher than last year's tally of about 161,000.

School system planners will continue to monitor growth and do anticipate increases in student enrollment over the next few weeks, Quintana said. Remaining enrollment counts will be conducted on Aug. 15, 22, 29, and Sept. 6.

Historically, enrollment continues to climb during the year with the post-Labor Day count more accurately reflecting school enrollment, Quintana said.
