Miss South Gwinnett High Earns Top Scholarship

Shakori Danielle Fletcher, a South Gwinnett High School student, was one of two GCPS students to earn a top scholarship from the Georgia United Credit Union. She is also the reigning Miss South Gwinnett High.

A student was one of two Gwinnett students to earn a top scholarship from the Georgia United Credit Union.

Shakori Danielle Fletcher, a senior at , was first runner up, earning a $2,000 scholarship. Karl-Mary Akre, a Peachtree Ridge High student was the first-place winner of $3,000, according to a press release from Gwinnett County Public Schools.

The scholarships are part of Georgia United Credit Union's Vernon E. Carne Scholarship program and the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship program. Recipients are chosen based on academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in school and community activities, as well an essay competition.

Fletcher, daughter of James and Charlene Fletcher of Grayson, has been accepted to Elon University. According to GCPS, she is a member of the varsity tennis team, the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and the Senior Cabinet. In addition, she is the president of the school's chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, vice-president of the student council, a mentor to peers and the current Miss South Gwinnett High.Β 

Including Fletcher's scholarship, a total $12,500 was awarded by Georgia United Credit Union. Thirteen high school seniors received awards.

School district officials said this is the 18th year that Georgia United Credit Union, formerly Georgia Federal Credit Union, has awarded the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and the fifth year for the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship. A total of $200,000 in scholarships has been awarded.Β
