Shiloh High Granted International Baccalaureate Status

Shiloh High School joins four other schools in Gwinnett County offering the rigorous program.

students in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) will have the opportunity to receive an International Baccalaureate (IB) education as the high school recently learned it has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme school.

Shiloh High plans to launch the program in the 2013- 2014 school year. With this approval, GCPS will now offer IB in two clusters: Shiloh and Norcross. Shiloh High joins Peachtree Elementary, Pinckneyville Middle, Summerour Middle, and Norcross High as the district’s IB schools.

"This is an exciting time at ,” said , principal of Shiloh High. "For two years, we have worked toward this goal, and the announcement that Shiloh will offer the distinguished International Baccalaureate Program is something in which we can all take pride as it will benefit our students and our entire community.

"By participating in this rigorous course of study our students will become better communicators, develop college-level research skills, expand their knowledge, and experience opportunities to apply their skills to extensive community service activities."

Groups of current Shiloh High ninth graders are taking preparatory classes this year and next year, and they will begin the full two-year IB program as juniors in fall of 2013. According to the nonprofit IB educational foundation, IB helps students to "develop the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world."

By obtaining IB World School status, is able to offer its learners a new and unique diploma choice that leads to an internationally recognized diploma, known for its rigor and emphasis on developing skills and character traits outlined in IB Learner Profile.

Shiloh High’s authorization consisted of an intensive two-year process, which began with submission of an application requesting candidacy status. The next step consisted of the development of units of inquiry and preparation of another application.

The final step consisted of a visit by an authorizing team. Based on the authorization visit, the school was awarded authorization status from the International Baccalaureate Organization.
