Snellville Middle Student Dies at School Dance

An eighth grade boy passed away after suffering a seizure Thursday night.

A Snellville Middle student died during a school dance Thursday night (Nov. 14) after suffering a seizure.

According to Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach, the eighth grade boy was transported to an area hospital where he passed away.

"The school has several emergency response teams at the school this morning," continued Roach. "They are visiting all of the eighth grade homerooms, meeting with teachers and staff, and talking to students who need assistance."

She also noted that Principal Katise Menchan will be sending a letter home Friday (Nov. 15) and posting it on the Snellville Middle website.

"This has been a very difficult day for all of us," wrote Menchan in the letter. "A loss like this touches not just our students but others throughout the school and community."

Many locals have taken to social media to express their condolences.

"My prayers are with the Snellville Middle School community and the Snellville community as we mourn the tragic death of a student," wrote Mayor Kelly Kautz on her Facebook page. "It is always sad when someone passes away but it is especially tragic when a young person, a child dies. Please keep his parents, family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."

"FB FAM please pray for the students at Snellville Middle School," wrote another user.

My heart is heavy for the parents and family of this young man. Also, for my daughter, who text me from school this morning to tell me she lost a good friend, someone who would always make her laugh when she was having a bad day. This is devastating for all of the students and faculty at SMS. Praying for everyone today for comfort during this very sad time.... Andria Smith

My prayers and thoughts are with Snellville Middle School at this sad time. Wow. My daughter attended one of those dances when she was a student at SMS.

Is there any information on the identity of the deceased student yet? My wife taught at Britt Elementary and she is wondering if the student was one of her former students.
