Thigpen Transfers to South Gwinnett High

After serving as assistant principal from 2005-2011, he will return soon as principal.

A familiar face to the South Gwinnett Cluster community will become the new principal of South Gwinnett High after the Gwinnett County Board of Education approved the recommendation of Eric Thigpen as the new leader.

The School Board voted to name Thigpen the school's new principal during its monthly board meeting in August. Thigpen will return to South Gwinnett High after most recently serving as the principal of Snellville Middle, a South Gwinnett Cluster middle school.

He was assistant principal at South Gwinnett from 2005-2011.

From 2001-2005, he served as assistant principal and Title I Mathematics teacher at Bainbridge High.  He also served at East Coweta High (Coweta County) as a math teacher and coach from 2000-2001, and at Eastside High (Newton County) as a math teacher and coach from 1997-1999.

Thigpen received his bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education from Georgia Southern University, and a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Albany State University.

A graduate of the school district's 2009 Quality-Plus Leader Academy, Thigpen will transition to South Gwinnett High in the coming weeks.  South Gwinnett is currently under the leadership of retired veteran educator and principal mentor Jane Stegall. The former Brookwood High principal was named interim principal in July.

SGHS has a winner in Eric Thigpen. As a City official I am ecstatic That Mr Thigpen will be taking the helm at South. As recently as Wednesday I watched this distinguished gentleman show his love and commitment to our community when he was Master of Ceremony for the Aimee Copeland home reveal. He will make us PROUD! Congratulations Eric, let us know how we can help! Tom Witts Mayor Pro Tem

I've met Mr. Thigpen on several occasions and he is a great choice for Principle! Hopefully he will reinstate the school's "Academic Team" that travels to other schools on weekends to compete in Math and other topics. As a former "Academic Team" member/captain in my HS days ("Mu Alpha Theta Math Club"), my name and number has been given as a volunteer chaperon so let's put SGHS on the map with some academic trophies!!! Parents and community leaders, let's make this happen!
