Brookwood Knocked Out of Playoffs by MLK

TDs on the last play of regulation and in OT give M.L. King 27-21 win over the Broncos.

The Broncos lost 27-21 in overtime to M.L. King in a second-round game played Friday night at Hallford Stadium in DeKalb County.

The Broncos (8-4) seemed to have the game in hand late in regulation when the Lions (12-0) scored on a 31-yard pass play on the final play. MLK made the extra point to tie game at 21-21 to force overtime.

Lions quarterback Jonquel Dawson threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the winners. Dawson’s 31-yard TD pass to a wide-open Cornell Byrd on the last play of regulation tied the game, and his 20-yarder to Blake Tibbs in OT proved to be the game-winner.

Brookwood, which handled MLK for most of the game, was unable to get a first down in overtime.

Jamaal Cole scored two touchdowns, and Nick Tompkins added another for the Broncos. Tompkins scored from the 3 for a 21-14 lead after a faked punt resulted in a 30-yard gain to the MLK 15.

Brookwood led 7-0 at half and then 14-7 with 9:01 remaining, with both scores coming on Cole runs.
