Just days ago Lucas Sims was pitching for basball team. Now, he's destined to be a hometown hero as a first-round draft pick for the Atlanta Braves.
"This is a dream come true, I've been a Braves fan all my life," said Sims, who was quoted on Twitter by the Braves.
Sims, who recently graduated from the Snellville high school, was the 21st pick for Major League Baseball during Monday's first-year player draft. The Atlanta Braves picked up the powerhouse pitcher, who is known as having "one of the best arms among available high school products," according to MLB.com.
He has a fastball pitch that hovers in the low 90s, according to published reports. Sims has said that John Smoltz was his favorite player growing up.
"My whole pitching career was patterned after John Smoltz," Sims was quoted in a Braves tweet as saying. "It's an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as him."
According to media reports, including ESPN.com, Sims actually has signed to play at Clemson University. He could still play with the Clemson Tigers if he does not decide to go with the Atlanta Braves.
