Lady Broncos Serve Up Another Win

The undefeated Brookwood High girls' basketball team take win against Berkmar High School, 62-38.

Brookwood proved there’s a lot of space between first and second place in Region 8-AAAAA girls basketball.

The undefeated Lady Broncos beat up on second-place Berkmar for the second time this season, running away with a 62-38 win Tuesday night in Lilburn. Brookwood is now 15-0 overall and 8-0 in the region standings, two games ahead of Berkmar, which fell to 12-5 and 6-2 in the standings.

Brookwood also routed the Lady Patriots 83-56 early last month in Snellville.

Brookwood’s girls, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class AAAAA, led Berkmar from start to finish, building as much as a 26-point lead in the second half.

A 14-3 Brookwood scoring run in the third quarter turned an 11-point halftime lead to 43-21 with 3:19 left in the period. Berkmar got no closer than 20 points the rest of the way.

Jazmine Jackson and Courtney Gardner each scored 16 points for Brookwood. Katie Mallow added 13, 10 or which came in the second half.

Kenisha Watkins scored 18 points for Berkmar.

In the boys game, Brookwood (5-11, 5-3) never recovered from a fast start by Berkmar (11-5, 5-3). The Patriots led 16-7 after one quarter and 30-16 at half. Brookwood never got closer than 10 points in the second half.

Thomas Higginbotham scored 12 points and Malcolm Hannah added 11 for Brookwood, which also shot less than 50 percent (8 of 17) from the free-throw line.

Yonel Brown scored 16 and Brandon Thompson added 15 for Berkmar.
