Newton Ruins Shiloh Opener, 21-0

Rams take advantage of Generals mistakes in coach Brian Montgomery's debut.

Newton capitalized on a pair of second-quarter Shiloh turnovers to take a 14-0 halftime lead on the way to a 21-0 win over the Generals Friday at Shiloh Community Stadium.

It was the debut of new Shiloh coach Brian Montgomery.

Shiloh's Donald Clark muffed a Rams punt at the Shiloh 3Β a minute into the second quarter, and the Rams recovered at the Generals' 3.

BJ Reid scored on the next play to give Newton a 7-0 lead with 10:58 left in the second quarter.

Shiloh was forced to punt from its own 21 on its next possession, but the snap sailed over the head of punter Daniel Wardell, and Newton's Tyrique Brown recovered in the end zone to put the Rams up 14-0 with 8:53 still left in the half.

Shiloh got its best scoring opportunity on its first possession of the second half, driving 79 yardsΒ on 19 plays and gaining a first-and-goal at the Newton 2-yard line late in the third quarter.

But the Rams held on four straight running plays to take over at their own 5 with 3:26 left in the period. Five plays later, Javonte Williams made the Generals pay as he broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run and a 21-0 Newton lead.

Newton's defense took over from there, holding the Generals to just three first downs the rest of the way. Shiloh quarterback DeVante James went 11-of-26 passing with three interceptions for 119 yards. Newton held the Generals to just 6 rushing yards on 16 attempts.
