Also, the U.S. has a narrow lead in the gold-medal total. China is second in both categories.

The top medal winner is U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, with four golds and six overall. Phelps now possesses 22 medals for his career. This includes 18 golds.
Among the other U.S. medal winners are swimmer Missy Franklin, 17, with four golds and tennis star Serena Williams, with two golds.
