Racers Lace Up for 'Run of the 'Ville'

Runners from across the state participated in Snellville's newest 5K and half-marathon races on Saturday, June 18.

Nearly 230 runners, both experienced and first-timers, showed up early Saturday for Snellville's newest half-marathon and 5K race, "Run of the ‘Ville."

As part of the , the event took place June 18, beginning and ending at Snellville's Briscoe Park. The half-marathon began at 7:30 a.m., and the 5K began 30 minutes later at 8:00 a.m.

Before the races began, runners were stretching, listening to music and eating snacks provided by event sponsors. Angel White, a resident of Snellville and her friend Monique were excited for the 5K race.

“We try to do a lot of races each year,” White said. “ We’ve done the Peachtree Road race and the Susan G. Komen race before. I’m hoping to beat my personal best time today.”

Other runners like Collisina Pemberton, a mother of four whose husband participated in the half-marathon, had simpler aspirations.

“This is my first race, so I’m really just hoping to finish," she sad. "I’ve been training a lot in the gym."

In addition to racers, friends and family members also showed up as moral support. Hyacinth Edwards, who came to root for her friend Daphne Edwards, said “everyone needs a personal cheerleader."

Tom Whitlock was another supporter, who had a lawn chair and newspaper handy as he waited for his wife.

“My wife is a runner and I am definitely not,” Whitlock said. “I wish I had GPS so I could know where she is in the race.”

Temperatures remained relatively cool and runners enjoyed clear skies. Georgia Cup Series organizer James Lowe said the event was “one of the most well-ran events we’ve ever had.”
