Shiloh Rallies Late, Stuns South Gwinnett 28-19

Generals trailed 19-7 before mounting comeback.

It looked like everything was going South Gwinnett's way.

The host Comets led Shiloh 13-6 late in the third quarter they blocked a Generals punt, and Ryan Fortson scooped up and returned to the Shiloh 8-yard line. Spencer Williams rolled into the end zone on the next play, giving the Comets a comfortable 19-7 lead with 3:59 left in the third quarter.

But Shiloh (1-2, 1-0 in 8-AAAAA) came roaring back, reeling off 21 straight points to stun South Gwinnett (0-3, 0-1) 28-19 at Richard Snell stadium.

A 35-yard punt return by Donald Clark put the Generals at the South Gwinnett 18 with just over a minute left in the third, and following a 1-yard gain by DeVante James, hauled in a 17-yard pass from James to make it 19-14 with 53 seconds left in the period. The Generals then mounted a 62-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard dive by James with 8:34 left in the fourth quarter to put the Generals on top for the first time, 21-19.

The Comets' Fred Langston fumbled a handoff on a reverse on the first play following the kickoff, and Philip Trochel recovered for the Generals at the South Gwinnett 13. After a holding call pushed the ball back to the 17, Donald Clark scored on an end-around to put Shiloh up 28-19 with 6:50 still to play.

South Gwinnett drove deep into Shiloh territory late, but Shiloh's Martin Rhymer picked off Mason Hart at the Shiloh 7 with 2:14 left to kill the comeback effort.

South Gwinnett scored on its first possession of the game when Hart hit L. J. Garney with a 20-yard TD pass. The Comets made it 13-0 with 53 seconds left in the first half when Colton Nash scored on a 1-yard run.

But Shiloh flew back down the field and James hit Clark with a 42-yard touchdown pass with no time left to cut the margin to 13-7 at the half.

The win on the Comets' home field avenged a 45-12 Comet victory last year at Shiloh.
