2012 Memorial Day Accident Count

According to the state highway patrol, there were fewer fatal accidents this year than in 2011.

Over the Memorial Day holiday there were more accidents but fewer injuries and fatalities in traffic incidents across the state, according to the Georgia State Highway Patrol.*

This year the highway patrol responded to 332 accidents, up from 312 in 2011. However, injuries decreased, with 196 injuries reported this year and 236 injuries reported last year.

Fatalities also were down in accidents specifically handled by the highway patrol, with six this year compared to 13 in 2011. One of those fatal accidents happened in Gwinnett County, according to the Georgia State Highway Patrol website.

Overall, state police said there were 15 fatal accidents -- reported by the highway patrol, sheriff's offices and police departments -- in Georgia.

In 2011, the entire statewide fatality count was 19, the state agency said.

*The Georgia State Highway Patrol monitors trafic counts during Memorial Day weekend from 6 p.m., Friday, May 25 to 12 a.m., Tuesday, May 29. A total of 78 hours are considered in the totals.
