Viewfinder: Local Boy Wants to E(lemon)ate Cancer

James Axmacher, a fourth grader from Snellville, hosted an Alex's Lemonade Stand on Saturday outside Unique Treasures on Highway 78. Proceeds from the sale help fund research to find a cure for childhood cancer.

James Axmacher spent his recent Saturday squeezing, slicing and serving for a good cause.

The fourth grader heard stories about family and friends who battled cancer, and when his school challenged students to hold an Alex's Lemonade Stand over the summer break, James knew it was something he wanted to do.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma as an infant.

In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Four years later she passed away.

James did his part to help on Saturday. He served up fresh-squeezed lemonade outside for donations. In addition to lemonade sales and donations James recieved, he will also get a percentage of June yard sales from Unique Treasures Flea Market.

Denise Axmacher, James' mother and manager of Unique Treasures, explained that each month Unique Treasures names a charity booth. At the end of the month, that charity booth receives 10 percent of the profits from the yard sales held outside the store. The month of June's charity booth is James' stand.

When asked why he wanted to man an Alex's Lemonade Stand, James gave a shy smile and answered, "to help beat cancer."
