How Much Will You Spend on School Supplies?

The average American parent is expected to spend nearly $689 on back-to-school items. Will you spend that much?

Students in Snellville and Atlanta are back in class, and kids in DeKalb and Fulton public schools will be in their seats Monday. For many parents, these are days that include high-stakes trips to the store to help their children find the perfect backpack and school supplies. And let's not even talk about clothes. The National Retail Federation projects that parents of children in grades K-12 will spend nearly $689 on their children's back-to-school needs, almost $85 more than last year. All of this got us wondering about the school supply lists that parents are asked to fulfill. Most of the lists look pretty straight forward. Student Athletes Get New Rules, Punishments for 2012-2013 Year

The Gwinnett County Public Schools code of conduct now has specific punishments for a number of infractions committed by student athletes. The rules begin the first time a student signs up for a sport this school year.

Gwinnett County Public Schools expanded its code of conduct rules to include specifics for student athletes -- on and off the field -- beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. According to a press release, the rules include higher expectations and "consistent consequences" for the violation of these rules. The new rules focus on student athletes as "representatives" of the Gwinnett County school district. The county's board of education approved the rules in the spring. "As a district, we feel that it is important for students and parents to understand that when a student chooses to participate in these activities, he or she is going to be held to a higher standard," said Mike Emery, the school district’s director of athletics, activities…

Berean Christian Church Hosts Back-to-School Bash

Hip-hop artist Chance and former Atlanta Hawks player Mike "Stinger" Glen performed and spoke at the event.

Berean Christian Church hosted their annual back-to-school bash this weekend and collected over 200 stuffed backpacks for low-income children and youth. The backpacks were donated by Academy Sports and Outdoors and were stuffed with school supplies donated by church members.  Besides physical donations, over $1,500 was given in cash.   Children of church members, needy families in the community and children at adopted schools, like Brookwood Elementary, will receive the supplies.  If any are left, the church will donate them to shelters.   A number of guests entertained children and youth as part of the Back to School Bash.  Up-and-coming rap artist Chance performed original music and shared his testimony.   Chance was raised in church, …

GCPS Adding More Healthy Options to School Lunches

Prices for lunch and breakfast at Gwinnett County schools will stay the same when kids return to classes Aug. 6.

Following the popularity of healthy additions last year, Gwinnett County Public Schools will be adding more options that pack a better nutritional punch. New on the lunch lines at schools throughout the county will be: Below is a breakdown of the 21,607,762 student lunches and 10,671,375 student breakfasts served in the 2011-2012 school year: The price for meals will remain the same as the last school year. Elementary school students will pay $2.00 for lunch and middle and high school students will pay $2.25. Reduced lunch is $0.40. Student breakfast is $1.25 and reduced breakfast is $0.30.

Cannon United Methodist Church Sends Backpacks with Blessings

Each bag filled with school supplies will be delivered throughout the area as children get ready to go back to school.

For more than 20 years, Gwinnett DFCS has been putting together back packs and school supplies for children in foster care and indigent child protective services families. Collecting supplies for elementary-aged children and completely filled backpacks for middle and high school children, case workers began delivery this week.  Cannon United Methodist Church in Snellville has been involved with the program for at least 15 of those 20 years. According to Beth Garvin, who has been the coordinator at Cannon since 2009, collection usually begins in late June and then throughout July. Three Gwinnett Schools to Have New Start Times

Give Center East, Give Center West and Hooper Renwick School have different hours for 2012-13 school year.

Starting and ending times for Gwinnett schools are set and revised if necessary to accommodate academic programs, scheduling, and transportation. Three of Gwinnett County’s Public Schools will have new school times beginning with the 2012-13 year, according to GCPS. The new school times are effective on Aug. 6, the first day of school. The new hours are as follows: Gwinnett InterVention Education Centers offer an alternative program for middle and high school students. The Hooper Renwick School offers special education programs. School hours for all GCPS schools are available on the school system’s website at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

Gwinnett Online Campus Expands to Middle School Classes

The charter school, which opened last year as a high school, will serve grades six through eight for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Gwinnett County Online Campus will expand its curriculum to the middle school level this fall, according to a press release. The charter school, which opened in Norcross last year as a high school under Gwinnett County Public Schools, will have 78 students enrolled in grades six through eight this August. The campus will have a total of 236 students for the 2012-2013 school year. Through its unique learning experience and scheduling flexibility, the Gwinnett Online Campus offers a combination of online and face-to-face on-campus learning. Gwinnett Schools Go Back Aug. 6 - What You Need to Know

Officials give details on preparations for returning and new students to Gwinnett County Public Schools for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year.

As the summer vacation winds down, Gwinnett County Public School officials are already releasing information to get students prepared for a return to classrooms. According to a press release, the 2012-2013 school year is the first time in more than a decade that no new school facilities will open, though there will be one expansion. Gwinnett County Online campus is adding middle school classes. There are about 265 new students expected for the upcoming school year, which brings the total enrollment to 162,635. In the district there are 132 facilities, including 77 elementary schools 26 middle schools, 19 high schools and 10 special entities. 2012 CRCT: Snellville Schools' Results

The Georgia Department of Education recently released school-level scores for the 2012 CRCT, Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests. See where your neighborhood school stands.

Among Snellville schools, Brookwood Elementary, Britt Elementary and Snellville Middle were the top scorers on the 2011-2012 Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) for grades 3-8, according to recently released data from the state Department of Education. Gwinnett students took the state-mandated tests in April, and around 12,000 students in each grade took the tests. The content areas are: Reading, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Data, released July 12, show Brookwood Elementary led in all grade levels; Britt Elementary did well in 3rd and 4th grade levels, while Partee, Pharr and Norton performed equally well on the 5th grade level; Snellville Middle led in every grade level and every subject for …

School Supply Drive to Benefit Students

Want to do something good? Head to the Snellville Staples to donate back-to-school items.

DoSomething.org and Staples are teaming up to provide needed back-to-school items for students in metro Atlanta, according to a press release.  As part of the fifth annual Staples for Students national school supply drive, teens are encouraged to collect the school supplies and donate them at their local Staples. "Actions speak louder than words, and we are determined to speak volumes when we team up with Staples for the fifth year on a campaign that gives young people the power to rock social change, really make a difference among their peers and take action in their very own communities," said Nancy Lublin, of DoSomething.org.
