Brookwood Sending Wrestlers to State Tournament

The state wrestling tournament will be held Feb. 14-16 in Macon, Ga.

Brookwood High School's wrestling team has four wrestlers who have qualified for the traditional state tournament this week. The tournament takes place Feb. 14-16 in Macon, Ga., according to the Georgia High School Association. Fans may watch the match live via GHSA.tv for a nominal fee, or after the conclusion of the tournament for free. Bronco Girls Cross Country Team Place First

The girls won the Gwinnett County Cross Country Championships for the third time in four years.

While no individual girl placed first, the Brookwood Broncos cross country girls' team won the overall championship with 34 points. Four girls finished in the top ten, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. "Our girls ran well today and to finish first without our No. 1 runner finishing, that's pretty special," said Brookwood head coach Chris Carter to the Gwinnett Daily Post. Quandra Shanks, one of their top runners, was not able to complete the race. The Brookwood boys team placed third. For further reading: Do you have pictures of the championship? Add them here!

Brookwood High's Shaun McGee Commits to UGA

McGee, who currently plays for the Brookwood Broncos, will join the Bulldogs after his senior year.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, rising senior Shaun McGee has committed to play football for University of Georgia in Athens following his senior year.   McGee played on Brookwood's defensive line last year, which he could continue to do for the Bulldogs.  He could also be a linebacker on the next level.  He accepted a scholarship from UGA on Monday, following this past weekend's "Dawg Night" prospect camp, according to the AJC.   He had a total of 32 separate offers.   We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Viewfinder: Brookwood Tennis Senior Day

Brookwood High School's varsity tennis team celebrated its senior members Monday afternoon before a match at Rhodes Jordan Park. Adding to the celebratory mood were the wins the team racked up against McIntosh High school that day.

The tennis teams at Brookwood High School recognized their senior players before a game against Fayette County's McIntosh High School on Monday afternoon. The seniors stood with their parents as the team coaches spoke about their accomplishments and college plans. After warm-ups, the varsity and junior varsity boys' and girls' teams tackled players from McIntosh High, with happy end results for the Broncos. Brookwood varsity girls had a good afternoon, with singles wins by Gabby Griffith, Rebecca Norton and Katie Kraft. The girls enjoyed a 4-1 win over the McIntosh Chiefst At the end of the night, the Brookwood boys remained unbeaten at 15-0. High School Football Predictions Class AAAAA Playoffs Brookwood (7-3) at Peachtree Ridge (8-2) This is one of the best first-round matchups in the state in Class AAAAA. The defending state-champion Brookwood Broncos play a Peachtree Ridge team that has looked like a title contender at times this season. The Lions, who shared 2006 state championship with Roswell, can do a variety of things well. Quarterback Billy Best is among the county passing leaders, and running backs Diandre Atwater and Raham Dixon have combined for 18 rushing touchdowns. The defense is allowing just 17 points per game. Brookwood Routs Berkmar, Will Play at Peachtree Ridge Next Week

Broncos scored 56 points in the first half in easy 71-8 win to finish the regular season.

Brookwood (7-3) scored 28 points in both the first and second quarters to blow out Berkmar 71-8 Friday night at Brookwood Community Stradium. The Broncos returned two interceptions and one punt for touchdowns in the rout. Jamaal Cole scored three touchdowns — two runs and an interception return — and Nick Tompkins and David Renard each scored a pair of TDs. Berkmar fell to 1-9. Brookwood, the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AAAAA, will play at Peachtree Ridge next week in the first round of the playoffs. Peachtree Ridge, which lost 28-0 at North Gwinnett Friday, is the No. 2 seed from Region 7-AAAAA. Brookwood is the defending Class AAAAA champion. -- This report was based on reader reports.
