The BYOD or, Bring Your Own Device, pilot began this past fall, and some 14 schools are participating in the innovative classroom program.
This school year at least 14 schools in five district clusters are participating in a pilot program designed to enhance learning through the use of electronic devices. The "BYOD" pilot -- which stands for Bring Your Own Device -- is part of eCLASS, Gwinnett County's digital content, learning, assessment, and support system initiative. As part of the pilot, select schools will allow some students and teachers to use their personal devices to access the Internet in hopes of creating better learning. -- Do you think the "BYOD" pilot program is a good idea? Dr. Brenda Johnson has been approved by the Gwinnett County School Board.
During a special called meeting on Friday, November 9, the Gwinnett County Board of Education named four veteran educators as school principals. The appointment of the Gwinnett educators is due to the retirement, transfers, and departure of current principals. The School Board approved Dr. Brenda Johnson as the new principal of Centerville Elementary, Dr. Stacey Schepens will serve Crews Middle as its new principal, Lilburn Middle will welcome Dr. Yvette Arthur as its new leader, and Mr. Jason Lane will transfer to lead Mill Creek High. The school principals will transition to their new roles within the coming weeks. Centerville Elementary’s principal improves her community’s future one child at a time.
Kim McDermon, principal of Centerville Elementary, says she didn’t always see herself in this role. For fifteen years, McDermon was a classroom teacher. Born in Albany, Kentucky, her husband was in the military, and so they lived in several different places. Her travels led her to teach in many different places and settings. “Every time my husband was transferred it was something new,” said McDermon. A mentor and principal where she worked recognized McDermon's potential and recommended she pursue a career path with more leadership potential.
