Unincorporated Snellville Feels Like 'Lost Colony'

McGill, a former District 3 commissioner, cites the recent homicide as an example of lax protection.

The recent homicide in Snellville prompted a resident and former Gwinnett commissioner to carry his concerns to the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. Curtis McGill, who served as District 3 commissioner from 1988-92, told the commissioners Tuesday that his area feels like a "lost colony" and needs more police protection and zoning enforcement. McGill said he lives on Temple Johnson Road, and that the March 30 slaying of Brent Francis happened "behind my house." Also, he said zoning regulators "just ignore" the area. Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash, who is a former auditor with Gwinnett County, remarked that she remembered McGill from his days as commissioner. She and current District 3 commissioner Tommy Hunter stayed…

The proposed budget is 8.5 percent lower than the 2012 budget.

Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash formally presented her proposed fiscal year 2013 budget to the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. The proposed budget totals $1.3 billion, which is 8.5 percent lower than this year’s $1.43 billion. Six county residents and business people helped craft the proposed budget by serving on the Chairman’s budget review committee. After hearing presentations from elected officials and department directors, the group studied departmental business plans and revenue projections to make recommendations for the budget.
