Op-Ed: Where is "WE the People"?: Response to DeKalb County School Board Suspension

State Rep. Dar'shun Kendrick weighs in on the controversy.

Many of you know that up until now, I have been silent on the DeKalb County School Board issue as this a VERY complex situation and a case of first impression for Georgia. There are multiple players and "what ifs" but I feel comfortable enough to make a brief statement about the Governor's recent decision to suspend (he hasn't actually removed them yet as they have a 30 day appeal process) six (6) duly elected DeKalb County Board Members. I truly believe that the ONLY goal that any legislator in the DeKalb county delegation has is to maintain accreditation for DeKalb's school system. We just differ on the MEANS and PROCESS by which we make that happen. Note that I am NOT attacking the MERITS of removal...I am attacking the PROCESS of …

Local Representatives Say "Keep In Touch"

State House Representatives Brett Harrell (106) and Joyce Chandler (105) meet with citizens before the start of the 2013 session.

Rep. Brett Harrell and new elected Rep. Joyce Chandler met with citizens in Grayson at a Town Hall meeting last week. It was an opportunity for citizen input about those things that are important to our community as well as an informational meeting pertaining to what our Representatives hope to accomplish during the 2013 session.  The informal discussion included topics ranging from Fair Tax initiatives to charter schools and ethics reform.  Fair Tax - This is not something the state can do in a single year; it is something that if approved, will take several years to phase into. We are already phasing out state property tax and last year's tax reform included definition of what is taxable. For example, consumers must now pay taxes on …

Letters to the Editor

Open Letter to Residents of District 93, from State Representative

Rep. Dar'shun Kendrick addresses concerns expressed by residents of District 93 regarding a lack of town hall meetings in Gwinnett.

(Editor's note: the following is a letter to the editor from State Rep. Dar'shun Kendrick.) I have heard from many of you your concern about my vigorous support of a series of town hall meetings that were planned in DeKalb County but no indication of when I would host a town hall meeting in Gwinnett. Please allow me to succinctly address those concerns. I will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting in Gwinnett, possibly along with other legislators, in February, after I obtain a good grasp of the issues under the Gold Dome. However, let me explain briefly the reason for my constant promotion of the town hall meetings in DeKalb. First, the town hall meetings in DeKalb and not being hosted by me personally but by the DeKalb House Delegation. I am …

State Rep. Dar'Shun Kendrick

5:22 am on Friday, January 11, 2013

Thank you all for your comments. There was never an issue about other Gwinnett representatives representing their constituents----the issue was specifically with me and why I hadn't had one yet prior to session but seemed to always be promoting the DeKalb House Delegation meetings (which, as I explained above, I'm Secretary so that's my job). Some seemed to be confused and thought I had the …   more ›

Obama "Not Quite There" During Debates, Says HD 94 State Rep.

A "Letter to the Editor" from State Representative Dar'Shun Kendrick following last night's debates.

(The following is a letter to the editor from House District 94 State Representative Dar'Shun Kendrick. Kendrick is running for HD 93.) It seemed as if President Obama was not quite "there" last night, to be honest. That being said, he's the incumbent going into the debates leading in the battleground states, particularly up several points in Ohio which many states consider a "must win" by Romney. The pressure was on Romney to perform, not the President, and, as a Democrat it saddens me to say it, but he did perform and quite beyond my expectations. He didn't offer specifics and at times seemed a little combative but it offered a contrast to the President who seemed to fail to connect with the audience and indeed did not have much eye …
