GDOT reports a tractor-trailer overturned damaging asphalt. Repairs have to be complete before road can be reopened.
Georgia Department of Transportation report that four of the five northbound lanes of I-85 at 316 are closed. Only one lane is open. In a press release, GDOT officials said a tractor-trailer overturned and lost its load of prefabricated concrete walls. Crews are on site removing the wrecked vehicle and its cargo. They hope to have three lanes open by noon. A 160-feet stretch of asphalt about 12-foot wide has to be removed and replaced before it can be opened for use. GDOT officials ask that motorists be wary of workers. Fifty-seven Georgia DOT personnel and many other motorists, passengers and contractor workers have been killed since 1973 in highway work zone accidents. Today and tomorrow, expect inside lane closures on I-85 during off-peak hours. The closures are happening as part of the I-85 Express Lane Project, in which the current HOV lane is being converted to a HOT lane by the Georgia DOT. The road work will only happen if weather permits. The daytime work will occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wed., June 1 and Thurs., June 2 between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Pleasantdale Road. Expect the inside lane in both the northbound and southbound direction to be closed. The nighttime work will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Wed., June 1 and Thurs., June 2. he Georgia Dept. of Transportation urges citizens to avoid roads again today, specifically I-285. The I-285 and I-75 interchange is reportedly very icy. I-285 eastbound from I-75 to I-85 has also been reported as hazardous. I-285 westbound from Flat Shoals Road to I-75 has been reported as extremely icy. At 9:15 a.m. spokesperson Karlene Barron said that these conditions persist, but that some very slow movement was beginning to happen eastbound and westbound on I-285. Also, Barron specifically pointed out issues with the ramp from I-85 to Pleasant Hill Road. The GDOT office said that crews are battling at least one inch of ice on the roadway.
