No, it's not your imagination - gas prices are going up. In just the past 36 days the cost at the pumps has steadily increased. And in the past three weeks the cost of a gallon of gas has jumped 40 cents. The average price of a gallon of gas is now $3.72 nationally. In Snellville the price is averaging around $3.70 according to GasBuddy.com and $3.79 in metro Atlanta. What's driving the prices up? The increased cost of crude oil, oil refinery shutdowns and speculation say the experts. AAA estimates that more people will hit the road this year than last.
Falling gas prices are expected to bring out more road travelers for the upcoming Indepedence Day holiday period, according to AAA. Thanks to cheaper gas in recent weeks, and a mid-week day for July 4 (Wednesday), the auto club projects that travel will tie 2007 as the highest volume in the past decade. The official holiday period is defined as Tuesday, July 3, through Sunday, July 8. Because the holiday falls on a Wednesday, the travel period is extended one extra day, according to AAA. Georgia is expected to have 1.1 million travelers, including auto, air and other. That's a 4.8 percent increase, with auto travelers spurring the biggest impact. Residents in unincorporated Gwinnett County will have to pay a little more each month to have their trashed removed starting next year. Under terms of a contract with trash hauling companies set in place in 2010, these residents will see an increase of 30 cents per month in their monthly fee in the 2012 billing cycle. This will bring the total monthly bill for weekly pickup of trash, bulky items and recycling to $18.16. The 12 month fee for 12 months of solid waste service to be included on the 2011 property tax bills totals $217.92. The county expects residents to receive those bills in the second week in September. The county says this fee is calculated from increases in the consumer price index and rising fuel prices.

Well... that did not take long. And all us Gwinnett County residents have no choices anymore. My trash service is 50% more now under this forced plan. Previously, our neighborhood was able to negotiate lower prices... now we don't have that option. Gwinnett has been my home all my life, but as soon as I am able... I am moving! more ›
