Superintendent to Address Shiloh Graduates

Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks will speak at the ceremony May 22.

Gwinnett County's superintendent is among speakers slated for the Shiloh High School graduation this week. Since 1996, Wilbanks has served as superintendent of the Gwinnett County Public Schools, the state's largest school district. In addition to Wilbanks, other speakers include: Dr. Robert McClure, school board member; Eric Parker, principal; Tilak Patel, valedictorian; and  Hermoon Worku, salutatorian. The school is graduating 429 students, with 42 honor graduates. The commencement ceremony takes place 4 p.m., May 22 at the Gwinnett Center Arena. Gwinnett School Board Approves 4 New Principals

Duncan Elementary, Level Creek Elementary, Mountain Park Elementary and Trip Elementary schools will all get new leaders.

The Gwinnett County school board has appointed four veteran educators to lead elementary schools in the coming school year.  School board leaders approved the changes at its monthly meeting May 17. The new school principals are:

Gwinnett County Public Schools announces names of Shiloh High School's 2012-2013 valedictorian and salutatorian.

Gwinnett County Public Schools has released the names of the 2012-2013 valedictorian and salutatorian from Shiloh High School. The title of valedictorian is normally given to the student with the highest GPA, and salutatorian is given to the student with the second-highest GPA. Gwinnett Schools Score Above State Average in New Performance Ratings

The state Department of Education released the first results from the new Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index on May 7. Among high schools, the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology scored the highest at 99.8.

Gwinnett County Public Schools scored above the state average in a new performance rating system that assesses whether schools are producing students ready for college. The state Department of Education released the first results, which are based on 2011-2012 data, from the new College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) on May 7. It considers achievement, progress, and the achievement gap using a 100-point scale, and replaces Adequate Yearly Progress used in No Child Left Behind. In Gwinnett County, the elementary score is 93.5, middle school is 94.3 percent and high school is 76.4 percent. That's compared to the state averages of: 83.4 for elementary schools, 81.4 for middle schools, and 72.6 for high schools. (See Chart B for …

GCPS 'I See a Cure" Completes Fourth Year, Raises Funds for Relay for Life

About 150 participated in the event on April 27.

In its annual "I See a Cure" event, Gwinnett County Public Schools participants raised about $4,000 for cancer awareness and research, according to organizers. The event was held April 27 at the Gwinnett County Public Schools district offices in Suwanee. Some 150 people attended. 11 Gwinnett Schools Land in State's Top 25 for Writing Test

A number of schools within Gwinnett County Public Schools are in the state's top 25 for the eighth-grade writing test. When comparing the percentage of students scoring in the "exceeds" category, 11 schools landed in the state's top 25 performers, according to a press release Gwinnett County school officials. With 33.4 percent of students exceeding standards, Osborne Middle School in Hoschton was the highest-ranking school in the state. Twin Rivers Middle School in Buford has the next highest ranking in Gwinnett County. About 25 percent of its students exceeded standards. GCPS Wins National Green Ribbon Award

Gwinnett County Public Schools will split a $10,000 prize with Cobb County's Ford Elementary.

Gwinnett County Public Schools is among the nation's first school districts to be awarded a sustainability award from the U.S. Department of Education. The announcement came this week to coincide with Earth Day. In addition to Gwinnett County's honor, Ford Elementary in Cobb County was named a 2013 national Green Ribbon School. For their outstanding green principles, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and Ford Elementary will split $10,000 in award money from the Turner Foundation.
