Gwinnett County Sending Assessment Notices April 5, But They May Spark Confusion

State-required notices to be mailed out April 5 do not reflect 2013 service districts.

Notices of current assessments for residential and commercial property owners in Lilburn and Gwinnett will be mailed out on Friday (April 5). But, don't pay or estimate your taxes on it. Factors associated with the Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) settlement could cause confusion. In a news release, Gwinnett County officials say the notices that are required by state law do not reflect the 2013 service districts that were implemented as a result of the SDS settlement with the cities. County officials said the new millage rate will be set in the summer, after assessments and appeals are completed in the spring. Rates will be determined by a property’s location, which determines what services are provided by the county. Property taxes will be…

County on Solid Ground Despite Economy, Nash Says

In the annual State of the County address, Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash says it's been a strong team effort that has helped move county in a positive direction.

Some 500 came to hear Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman Charlotte Nash deliver the State of the County address on Wednesday at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth. Nash, who has been at the helm of the county for about a year after winning the chairman's seat in a special election in March 2011, was quick to point out that it was a team effort that has helped see the county through some of the toughest economic times in recent history. "It takes all of us working as a team to move the county in the right direction," said Nash. The chairman acknowledged the challenges of managing through the affects of the nation's recession. "It's tempting to see nothing but the obvious results of a worldwide economic downturn," said Nash …

Gwinnett Service Delivery Ruling: What's Next?

County is ordered to set up special service districts to fund some services. Police radar use remains unclear.

Now that the ruling in the long-running Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) legal dispute between Gwinnett County and many of its cities has been issued, the question is: What happens now? Also, when will the Gwinnett Police Department and several of the police departments in affected cities be able to use radar to track speeders again? The answers: The SDS ruling favors the cities in the Gwinnett Municipal Association on key matters. Barrett's order expressly said that the county has no authority to levy a tax or fee on residents of a city whose municipality does not accept and jointly fund an SDS service, such as police. The county now must set up by Nov. 1 Special Service Districts to handle funding for some services, such as transit, tax …

Services Dispute Lingers Between County, Cities

Both parties to double-taxation dispute 'feeling the decline.'

The lingering Services Delivery Strategy (SDS) between Gwinnett County and several of its cities is ... lingering. Both sides say talks are ongoing, but bottom line is there's no deal. The matter came up again this week during budget-review sessions for the Gwinnett County government, and it manifests itself every time a police officer in the county has to use his instincts rather than technology to try to arrest a speeding vehicle. The double-taxation matter dates to 2009, when the county sued the cities in the Gwinnett Municipal Association. The amount of money at stake has been estimated at $14 million. Lilburn since has settled with the county. Judge David Barrett of the Enotah Judicial Circuit in Blairsville is presiding in the case, …

Gwinnett County Trash Fees Increasing

The monthly fee for solid waste removal in some areas will go up starting in 2012.

Residents in unincorporated Gwinnett County will have to pay a little more each month to have their trashed removed starting next year.  Under terms of a contract with trash hauling companies set in place in 2010, these residents will see an increase of 30 cents per month in their monthly fee in the 2012 billing cycle. This will bring the total monthly bill for weekly pickup of trash, bulky items and recycling to $18.16. The 12 month fee for 12 months of solid waste service to be included on the 2011 property tax bills totals $217.92. The county expects residents to receive those bills in the second week in September. The county says this fee is calculated from increases in the consumer price index and rising fuel prices.

Well... that did not take long. And all us Gwinnett County residents have no choices anymore. My trash service is 50% more now under this forced plan. Previously, our neighborhood was able to negotiate lower prices... now we don't have that option. Gwinnett has been my home all my life, but as soon as I am able... I am moving!   more ›

Property Tax Bills Arriving Next Month

Property owners have to make a single payment this year, but have until Nov. 15 to make that payment.

Gwinnett County residents can expect a little something in the mail from the county next month – their property tax bills. Tax Commissioner Richard Steele announced that the 2011 property tax bills would be mailed by Sept. 15. Unlike previous years, however, payment is due in one lump sum this year, but taxpayers have until Nov. 15 to make that one payment. “New legislation concerning assessments and appeals added an additional 60 days to the billing schedule,” Steele said in a press release. “Bills are going out in September instead of July, and we’re collecting the total property tax bill in a single installment this year.”  Property owners will also be able to access 2011 tax information online atwww.GwinnettTaxCommissioner.com no later…
