Katie's leadership on the court and off the court make her a notable for this week's Whiz Kid.
Whiz Kid's Name: Katie Mallow Whiz Kid's Age: 17 Whiz Kid's School: Brookwood High School Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: This year Katie, a 5-foot-9 shooting guard with the Lady Broncos, helped take her team to a wins at the Deep South Classic and the Region 8-AAAAA championship. She was also a lead scorer in the first-round of the state championship this year. As a junior, Katie showed prowess as a three-point shooter and helped lead her team to the state finals that year, as well. She will be graduating soon and heading to Appalachian State. The Brookwood High athlete died about a year ago, but her school and parents make sure she is not forgotten.
Amanda Riley would have been a senior at Brookwood High School this year. She would have triumphed with the girls’ basketball team in winning the regional championship. She would have been an integral part of the cross-country team that came in second in the state. In some ways, she still was. After battling cancer for a little more than a year, Amanda died on April 9. Her tenacious spirit inspired her teammates and high school peers, and it continues to. “Amanda’s fighting spirit is a great inspiration to us,” said Scott Terry, head coach of the Brookwood girls’ basketball team. “Amanda is still with us and will always be in our hearts.” At the beginning of the season, the team met to set goals. Brookwood High School girls basketball team now plays Northview in first round of state tournament. South Gwinnett girls finish big in overtime game.
Brookwood used a tenacious defense and balanced scoring to beat Parkview 49-44 and win the Region 8-AAAAA girls basketball championship Saturday in Lilburn. Brookwood had four players score in double figures. Jazmine Jackson and Courtney Gardner finished with 11 points each and Autumn Adams and Rebecca Walker added 10 each. Marissa Mandeldove finished with 19 points for Parkview and Katie Carroll had 10. Brookwood (25-2), which will host Northview Feb. 25 in the first round of the state tournament, won despite making only 15 of 34 free throws. Brookwood girls advanced to the region final, winning Friday against South Gwinnett with a score of 61-54. The Lady Broncos (24-2) will play rival Parkview (22-4) in tonight's regional final. The game will be held at 6 p.m. at Parkview High School in Lilburn. The team had its first upset of the season to Parkview earlier this month, losing 47-61. It also lost to South Gwinnett in a hard-fought, close game, 63-67. Parkview held off Berkmar Friday in a 65-27 win, to secure its spot in the finals. Brookwood girls basketball team lost its first game of the season Tuesday to Parkview, 61-47. Brookwood boys also fall to the rival team.
Katie Caroll scored 17 points to lead Parkview to a 61-47 upset win over Brookwood, handing the top-ranked Lady Broncos (22-1) their first loss of the season Tuesday in Snellville. Parkview dominated on the inside, thanks to center Mia Marshall and forward Erika Joseph, who were both able to grab offensive rebounds and turn them into points. Joseph finished with 13 points and Marshall added nine. "Typical Parkview versus Brookwood. I mean it's always a war. The undefeated Brookwood High girls' basketball team take win against Berkmar High School, 62-38.
Brookwood proved there’s a lot of space between first and second place in Region 8-AAAAA girls basketball. The undefeated Lady Broncos beat up on second-place Berkmar for the second time this season, running away with a 62-38 win Tuesday night in Lilburn. Brookwood is now 15-0 overall and 8-0 in the region standings, two games ahead of Berkmar, which fell to 12-5 and 6-2 in the standings. Brookwood also routed the Lady Patriots 83-56 early last month in Snellville. Berkmar did manage a split Tuesday, as the boys team defeated Brookwood 60-40. Brookwood’s girls, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class AAAAA, led Berkmar from start to finish, building as much as a 26-point lead in the second half.
