It's World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2012. In Georgia, a number of buildings will shine blue lights in solidarity.

Across the globe today and throughout the month of April, people are joining together to bring more awareness to autism, a neurological disorder that affects 1 in 88 children. April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, and the month of April is considered Autism Awareness Month. To highlight the importance of being informed, communities will participate in Autism Speaks' second annual Light It Up Blue campaign. More than 1,000 buildings in more than 180 cities and 30 countries will shine bright blue lights in solidarity. Autism spans a number of degrees, and a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 1 in 88 children are affected. Brookwood Student Shines Light on Autism

Jordan Randles knows what it's like to live on the periphery, and he doesn't want that for others diagnosed with autism.

When it was time to choose a team project for Junior Achievement, Jordan Randles and his group went through a slew of items. Maybe they would sell knick-knacks, bracelets or, in Jordan's words, "some item-finder thing." Those ideas, however, had no real meaning to him or any of his teammates. They had no depth.  And, then, it came to him. He would bring awareness to autism, the cultural fallout for which he is no stranger. "When I was in elementary school I was actually taken out because people didn't like me," said Jordan, 16, a junior at Brookwood High in Snellville, Ga. "I felt really, like, isolated.
