Letters to the Editor

David Johnson Issues Call to Action Following His Sister's Death

The Gwinnett County School Board and Superintendent need to go, according to David Johnson, brother of a young woman who passed away from a rare bacterial infection.

Editor's note: the following is a letter to the editor sent by David Johnson, Hannah Rinehart's brother. Hannah passed away last month from a rare bacterial infection that led to blood poisoning. Her husband, Mark Rinehart, teaches math at South Gwinnett High School. Prior to Hannah's death, Mark and David tried to get a policy changed regarding donated Paid Time Off (PTO). The current policy does not allow faculty members to donate their unused sick days to another teacher if their spouse is ill. The following opinion is that of the author, and does not reflect the views of Patch or its employees. For further background information, see the following stories: ------------------------------- The Gwinnett County School Board and …

Jen Falk for District 3 - votejenfalk.com. All three incumbants from the "odd" districts 1, 3, and 5 are on the ballot. All the districts have been "realligned" so you may not be voting for (or against) who you think. Many in Norcross and the "Chesney" area of Duluth are no longer in District 3. However, District 3 stretches up Gwinnett's West coast to include all of Peachtree Ridge, and much of …   more ›

South Gwinnett's Sgt. Christopher Diaz: 'Mark Rinehart is our Battle Buddy'

A Letter to the Editor from South Gwinnett's Jr. ROTC commander.

The following is a Letter to the Editor from Sgt. Christopher Diaz, commander of South Gwinnett's Jr. ROTC. "A few Cadets (Cadet Sergeant First Class Dallis Cash, Cadet Staff Sergeant Kylin Mills and Cadet Captain Martha Iracheta) presented a Raider T-shirt to Mr. Rinehart today during 3rd period. You have to earn that T-shirt. You can’t purchase them.  We made him an honorary Raider for his hard work and dedication, and for the way he is pushing through his situation. He practiced with us yesterday during our Raider Practice and has an open invite anytime. You have no idea how that made me feel when he came out to support my guys.  He’s a tough one, if you know what I mean.  He’s the tough one. He’s a trooper. He’s a Raider. He’s our …

Family of Quadruple Amputee Pleads for School Board Policy Change

Friends and family of Hannah Rinehart make a case for creating a sick leave pool during the Gwinnett County School Board meeting, but left with no promises.

Family and friends filled the room as the Rineharts spoke before the Gwinnett County School Board Thursday night, pleading with the board to change the district’s sick leave policy.  Mark Rinehart, Hannah's husband, is a math teacher at South Gwinnett High School.  He now has a little over 20 days of sick leave left before he loses his pay and his insurance. According to family, that’s not nearly enough time, and so they are asking that the school board allow fellow teachers to donate their paid time off (PTO).  Mark's hope is that people will be able to donate their unused PTO to him. According to Mark, Gwinnett County policy doesn't allow that.    “I would like to speak to you simply as a dad,” said Doug Johnson, Hannah's father, to the …

Delegate this to Human Resources to fast track a revision based on this becoming a reoccurring request by the employees .This is a no brainer positive benefit to the employees of GCPS in a time when raises are non existent and this could be a great morale booster without increasing cost .
