Martin Luther King Day Parade Draws Hundreds

With participating high schools and a full morning of entertainment, Snellville's 2nd annual MLK Day parade exceeded expectations.

Both Shiloh and South Gwinnett High were involved in this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Day parade,  adding energy, enthusiasm and excitement to an event that drew hundreds of people. “I think that the diversity we have in Snellville has allowed people to feel at home here,” said New Jerusalem Baptist Church’s Rev. Elijah Collins, “and not feel like they have to leave Snellville to celebrate the day. It gives the community an opportunity to celebrate the King Day in their own hometown.” Collins, who organized the event along with the City of Snellville, invited local officials and musicians to perform on the Snellville stage at City Hall after the event. Snellville's Second Annual MLK Day Parade Scheduled for Jan. 21

The event is a joint effort between Mayor Kelly Kautz and New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Pastor Elijah Collins of New Jerusalem Baptist Church and Mayor Kelly Kautz have announced plans for Snellville's second annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration. The theme of the event is "unity in the community." "We need unity at this point in time in Snellville more than ever," said Kautz. Snellville was the last city in Gwinnett to adopt the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. Despite the adoption of the celebration in 2007, 2012 saw the first official parade.  The group will leave at 11 a.m. on Jan. 21 at New Jerusalem; the city is invited to line up at 10:45.
