Player of the Week: B.J. Sammon

Senior wide receiver scored three touchdowns in playoff win over Peachtree Ridge.

  SNELLVILLE PATCH FOOTBALL HONOR ROLL Player of the Week B.J. Sammon Brookwood may be considered a run-oriented football program, but it was a wide receiver who played the biggest role in the Broncos’ 30-27 win over Peachtree Ridge last week in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs. The senior scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. Sammon had three catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns — including a 42-yard gain on a reverse-and-pass play — and scored on an eight-yard end around run in overtime. Snellville Patch Football Honor Roll Player of the Week Michael Gouge/Brookwood Brookwood tight end Michael Gouge turned in one of the more memorable plays in a memorable football game. In last week's heartbreaking 14-7 loss at Grayson, the senior tight end put the Broncos on the cusp of an upset with his third-quarter touchdown reception. On the 21-yard play, Gouge grabbed Zach Moon's pass, ran through a Grayson defender at around the 10, then over another one near the goal line to tie the game at 7-7. According to coaches, Gouge also graded at 90 percent on his blocking assignments. Other top performances: BROOKWOOD B.J. Sammon, wide receiver: The senior had five receptions for 58 yards. Snellville Patch Football Honor Roll Player of the Week Brandon Wise/Shiloh Shiloh running back Brandon Wise had his best game of the season in last week's 55-28 win overt Berkmar. Wise rushed 14 times for 180 yards and three touchdowns as the Generals ended a five-game losing streak and ruined Berkmar's Homecoming game. On defense, Wise added two tackles and one assist. Other top performers: SHILOH Justin Martin, running back: Carried 15 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Clayton Smith, receiver: Two receptions for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the way was senior linebacker Conner Hennessey. Hennessey had seven tackles, three assists, three sacks and one tackle for loss for the Broncos, who won their fourth straight game. The running back gained 185 yards and scored two touchdown on just 16 carries (11.6 yards per carry) in last week's 49-17 win over Berkmar. Cole, a junior running back, accounted for 231 total yards and three TDs in the Broncos’ win. He rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and had five pass receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown. Snellville Patch Football Honor Roll Player of the Week Mason Hart/South Gwinnett South Gwinnett quarterback Mason Hart accounted for nearly 400 yards rushing and passing in Saturday’s wild 63-55 win over Central Gwinnett in the Georgia Dome. According to an article in the Gwinnett Daily Post, Hart passed for 283 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns. His total yards set a school record, according to the newspaper. Other top performers SOUTH GWINNETT Tyrone Atchison, receiver: Had six receptions for 103 yards, according to the newspaper report. But Devante James and the Generals struck when they needed. After falling behind 13-0, James completed a 41-yard touchdown to Donald Clark and later a 17-yarder to Paul Martin in a 28-19 win over the Comets Friday night. Clark finished six of 17 for 106 yards and two touchdowns, according to a report in the Gwinnett Daily Report. Snellville Patch Football Honor Roll Player of the Week Nick Tompkins/Brookwood  Nick Tompkins and the Brookwood Broncos came back strong last week after their 0-1 start. Tompkins carried 27 times for 118 yards as the defending state champions beat Collins Hill 24-7. Tompkins led the Broncos to a 21-0 first-half lead that put the game away early. He had 79 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Other top performances: Brookwood Jamaal Cole, running back: Twelve carries, 66 yards, two touchdowns; two interceptions on defense. Player of the Week: Mason Hart

Backup overcomes adversity in loss, stepping in for injured quarterback only to meet with a family tragedy soon after.

Junior quarterback Mason Hart of South Gwinnett had less than a week to realize that he would be the starting quarterback against the No. 3-ranked Lowndes County Vikings. Hart took over for starting quarterback Jordan Ramey, who broke an arm in the scrimmage earlier this month. And, when his team got the ball on their first possession, Hart led the South Gwinnett Comets on a scoring drive that was highlighted by a perfect 38-yard fade pass to Mark Watts for a touchdown. Hart finished 17-25 for 108 yards and the one touchdown. He did have two interceptions in a 45-13 loss, however. Following Friday's game, on that Sunday, August 21, Hart's family also experienced a personal tragedy, with his home being completely lost to a fire. For Harts …
