Thad Weed used to run Wild Birds Unlimited; now he's helping you rent RVs.
For several years, Thad Weed was known for his bird stores in Snellville and then in Loganville, Wild Birds Unlimited. Weed closed the last store in 2009, but he's decided to come out of retirement. Nearly 20 businesses in Snellville, including several nonprofits, are in the running for a piece of the $3 million pot.
Chase and LivingSocial are giving small businesses around the nation the chance to boost their budgets with a new contest, and at least 18 Snellville businesses are currently in the running. Chase and LivingSocial will award up to $250,000 to 12 winning businesses, for a maximum total of $3 million. Businesses have to receive 250 votes to be considered. The voting period ends June 30, 2012. Interested companies may also apply to the contest before then, as well. For official rules and other information, click here. The city of Snellville is launching a strategic economic development action plan, and leaders want your input. The purpose of this study is to prepare a competitive profile of the city's business environment within the city, outline a strategy to improve the business environment and support entrepreneurship in Snellville. There are 23 questions in the survey ranging from the type of business survey participants may own to the types of businesses that could be most important for Snellville's future. To further this ideas, the city is also working with consultant Market Street Services. At a cost of about $40,000, the consultant is expected to work with the city until the end of May. This week, the city of Snellville will host several events that support small businesses.
During the week of November 12-19, the city of Snellville will be celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week with several events to support entrepreneurs and small businesses in the community. The newly elected mayor Kelly Kautz and city council members will kick off the week's activities today with a proclamation. The Snellville City Council gathers at City Hall at 7:30 p.m. for its regular meeting. On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the South Gwinnett Entrepreneurship Alliance will host the “Unleashing Ideas Summit” for students and mentors of the program. About 30 local students, business leaders and city officials traveled to the Cobb Energy Center to learn new ways to promote commerce on a recent Friday. Leaving from City Hall at 6:15 a.m., the group drove the 35 miles to listen to Tom Szaky, founder and chief executive officer for TerraCycle. Szaky is INC Magazine’s #1 CEO under the age of 30. The trip was part of a public-partnership with small business owners throughout the area.
