Dr. Jessica Chen keeps you on pins and needles.
(Editor's Note: Due to Election Day coverage, we are running the Hey Y'all column this week on Wednesday, November 9.) I met Dr. Jessica Chen when I was exploring acupuncture and massage for those old nagging aches and pains. You know the ones that we actually created in our youth, when we thought we were invincible. You remember being young and doing those fancy dives at the swimming pool? How about those times when you picked up 50 pounds as if it were five? Remember catching that pass playing football in the back yard? Playing basketball and even though you were only 5’5”, you thought you could slam dunk? The only thing that was slammed dunked was you. Yeah, my back hurts thinking about it all, too. I got a two for one deal with Dr. …
Marlene takes us on a tale of horses, from those munching in her grass to a very precarious ride with a very pregnant mare.
We'd just driven in from seeing Dr. Kathryn Padgett at Gwinnett Animal Hospital. The kittens needed their booster shots. Snell said “Well, look over there.” It isn’t uncommon to find deer in the yard. We have a doe with triplets. That is pretty rare. They usually have only one fawn, maybe two, but three! That poor mama. She has her hooves full taking care of those babies. I saw a red spot and thought it was our Mama Doe and her babies, Hughie, Dewie and Louie. It wasn’t. Four horses. Two sorrels (red), one gray and one black. We drove in and found them complacently munching on the grass. I knew we needed to cut grass. I kept trying to will them into one particular area that is terribly over grown. They were absolutely beautiful. I told …

Marlene takes a trip down memory lane.
The other day Cece Landress, originally from Snellville and a South Gwinnett graduate, sent me a link to the "You know you're from Snellville if..." Facebook page. I have been on the site and have enjoyed it thoroughly. The Old Teaching Days Cece and I taught at Parkview for years. The “kids” who are writing about their experiences growing up in Lilburn made me laugh. I remember some of the escapades those varmints got into. I had a few parent conferences on some those adventures through the years. And, those kids are now parents who would have a stroke if they knew their children were doing the same things they did. The Snellville account probably hits closer to home. My husband Snell taught, coached and was a counselor at South …

I can remember went Mr.Troy would get myself and Bill Snell out of class to fill the coke machines in the old rock school, and Mrs. Mae Britt would always save us lunch that day, and getting called out of class to help Bill get his Uncle Ceryl's horse's up, and getting in the gym on Sunday afternoons and playing basketball. The city of Snellville is working to identify and restore unmarked graves within the Snellville Historical Cemetery.
The city of Snellville is in the preliminary stages of a cemetery project that will identify the unmarked graves within the Snellville Historical Cemetery. The cemetery, which is located near City Hall is the final place of rest for well-known Snellville residents dating back to the 1800s. Although the tales of these well-known residents have lived on through family generations, some were lost in a fire that occurred in City Hall. The fire destroyed records of burial plot locations and in some instances, who was buried inside the cemetery. The exact year of the City Hall fire is unknown but is believed to have occurred in the early 1900s. Since then funeral homes such as Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, LLC have had difficulty when making …

After calling a special session, the city council approved a millage rate for the 2011-2012 year.
In a matter of minutes Snellville's City Council approved a millage rate for the 2012 fiscal year. The new millage rate is set at 5.7 and will provide a $12.20 deduction for individuals. The motion was proposed by Council Member Barbara Bender, and following a split decision at the July meeting the council decided to reconvene Monday in a special session to voice their votes. "After reviewing our last meeting and looking over the reports I am more comfortable than ever with the new millage rate," Bender said. The new millage rate was passed 6-0, and council members seemed pleased to resolve the issue. "It's not often that we are able to offer a decrease in anything to our residents," said councilwoman Kelly Kautz. "Even though the …
