Stranger Danger and Preschoolers

How do you begin to address the issue of stranger safety with your preschooler?

By now we all know the story of the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard, the little 11-year-old girl who was held captive for 18 years. As mothers, it is our worst nightmare: the disappearance of our children. Even as I write this, there is a sense of panic that invades at the thought of anything happening to Lilliana. My heart starts to beat faster, and I have to look over at her on the couch to reassure myself. We can watch them when they're with us. We can take all the safeguards. We can pick a safe preschool. We can do background checks on everyone around us. We can take their safety to a new level of paranoia. But, we cannot always guard against that one mistake on someone else's part. We cannot always protect them every second of every day…
