Brookwood Student Loses Best Friend to Childhood Cancer

Letter to the Editor from Brookwood student Emily Good, who has lost two best friends to cancer. She writes this letter in honor of Taylor Filorimo, who passed away yesterday.

In the fourth grade, I met my best friend Daniela Joel. Back then we would talk about the future and what it might hold, like going to high school or getting our license but what neither of us saw coming was cancer. Daniela was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, an inoperable brain tumor, when she was 12 years old. This cancer took away her ability to walk, talk, or eat, but not her ability to think. She still managed to get straight As in school while undergoing heavy chemo and radiation treatments. But DIPG has a less than 10% survival rate, and although Daniela was already a living miracle and defying all odds of what the doctors had said after a two year battle with cancer, she passed away on September 21, 2010, at only …

Wednesday's Woman: Emily Good

This young woman is changing the world, and she isn't even 16 yet.

Emily Good, a sophomore at Brookwood High School, spends as much time online as any other teenager, but her experience isn't solely about engaging friends on social media. She spends most of her time sending out information and awareness about cancer, a disease that has affected too many people in her young life.  Good remembers watching a show sponsored by St. Jude around the age of six. The stories of young children affected by cancer and other life-threatening diseases spoke strongly to her heart, and she has been passionate about raising awareness and funds ever since.  At the age of ten, she led a group of four other children in a Jump-a-Thon.  “We went and collected money, and jumped rope to raise money for St. Jude,” she explained. …
