Interested in volunteering at the shelter? Complete the Gwinnett Animal Shelter volunteer form. Volunteers can help at the shelter by walking dogs, handling cats and kittens, cleaning and sanitizing animal areas and assisting citizens.

Authorities at the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter say a concerted effort to make improvements at the shelter is bearing fruit. Euthanasia is down and more animals are being place in permanent homes. According to a press release, the following statistics were reported at the last meeting of the Animal Advisory Council Oct. 18 on improvements in 2011 over 2010: Officials attribute these successes to several factors, including new programs such as C.L.A.S.S. (Canine Life and Social Skills), which trains shelter dogs in basic skills to make them more appealing to potential adopters. Another is the Petco Adoption Partnership, which helps place cats and kittens in homes. There are 30 active volunteers working in the shelter at various jobs …

Each year, thousands of animals find their way into the care of Gwinnett County’s Animal Shelter. Finding good homes for as many as possible requires more than just feeding, sheltering and then waiting for the “right” person to find just the perfect pet. The Internet allows the public to see the faces of the many of the cats and dogs who are put up for adoption each week, but sometimes, high-tech solutions need some real-people assistance. Enter Cathy Bruce, Certified Pet Dog Trainer and owner of the Canine Country Academy based in Dacula. Having worked with Gwinnett Shelter’s Lt.
