Carl 'Skip' Cain Ordered to Report to Prison by Jan. 7

U.S. District Court judge grants extension until Jan. 7 because Cain's wife was hospitalized. Cain had been scheduled to report to federal prison Dec. 19.

After being granted a brief reprieve because his wife was in the hospital, Carl “Skip” Cain of Flowery Branch has been ordered to report to federal prison by Jan. 7 to begin serving a 57-month sentence without parole. Cain pleaded guilty earlier this year to participating in a bribery scheme involving former Gwinnett County commissioner Shirley Lasseter and to drug trafficking charges. Cain, 65, has been assigned to a federal prison in Edgefield, SC. The Federal Correctional Institute at Edgefield is a medium security facility for male offenders. It is located near the Georgia-SC border about 25 miles north of Augusta. FCI-Edgefield has a current prison population of 1,668. Lasseter began serving a 33-month sentence for bribery Dec. 12 at …

Nash, Hunter and Brooks to Be Sworn in Sunday

Group swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

Gwinnett County District 3 Commissioner-elect Tommy Hunter, Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash and District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks will be sworn in this Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center.  Nash, who has served 18 months as chairman since winning a special election in March of 2011, was unopposed in both the primary and general election and will begin a four-year term in January. Hunter defeated two-term commissioner Mike Beaudreau in the August runoff and was unopposed in the general election. He takes office in January. Former Gwinnett Commissioner Reportedly Files for Bankruptcy

Kenerly lists debts of $3.5 million.

Former Gwinnett County Commissioner Kevin Kenerly, who left office amid a scandal in 2010, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to a published report. Kenerly reported assets of less than $50,000 and debts of about $3.5 million, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He represented District 4, which includes Lawrenceville, Braselton, Buford and Sugar Hill. Kenerly left office amid a grand-jury investigation into allegations that commissioners overpaid for some land deals that benefited commissioners' allies. The AJC report said that Kenerly's debts include $1.6 million on a house in Chateau Elan in Braselton, custom designed with nine bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, and currently for sale at $2.8 million.
