Vets are warning that bills for veterinary services are likely to go up as a result of taxes on medical equipment.
Now that parts of the health care law are being implemented, some of the unintended consequences are beginning to surface. According to a story on CBS out of Miami last week, some of those consequences will be felt by the country's four-legged residents. It reports on a dog owner who was surprised to find that her veterinarian has warned of an impending increase in services in the near future. The reason? The 2.3 percent federal excise tax on medical equipment that just went into effect. This tax is to help fund the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — for people. Some conservative news organizations have taken a close look at new rules released by the IRS on Jan. 30 on the new health care regulations and found them wanting … wanting much more, in fact, by 2016. According to Breitbart.com, the IRS estimates that by 2016 the cheapest Obamacare plan will cost $20,000 for a family of five. That would be for a bronze plan. Other plans offered go up from there to silver, gold and platinum. The IRS used as an example a family of five earning $120,000 a year. If no family members had insurance, they would be subject to a “shared responsibility” penalty putting them into the Bronze plan. The tax penalty for that is $2,400 a month or $20,000 a year. A federal judge rejected the business' request to block the mandate to provide morning-after and week-after birth control pills. Is this an assault on religious liberty?
A federal judge has ruled against Hobby Lobby, a Christian-owned company that describes itself as a "biblically founded business" in its attempt to apply for exclusion in one of the Obamacare mandates. Hobby Lobby believes that the "use of the morning-after and week-after birth control pills are tantamount to abortion because they prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in a woman's womb," CBS.com reports. This is the largest corporation to file suit against the mandate. It has, however, been denied. Churches and religious institutions and corporations have been given a reprieve from these particular mandates, but not businesses. The highest court of the land upholds the Affordable Care Act. What do you think about that?
In a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Thursday the controversial health care law trumpeted by President Barack Obama. The Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, will impact many Americans, and the upcoming November election. According to CNN, the Supreme Court decided that the individual mandate that requires people to have minimal and essential health insurance is valid as a tax, though it is not permitted under the Constitution's commerce clause. In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts said: "People, for reasons of their own, often fail to do things that would be good for them or good for society.
