Vickie Garmon, 57, passed away on February 16 after receiving a cancer diagnosis just two weeks earlier; the students raised money for Relay for Life in her honor.
On Friday, March 15, Shiloh Elementary students held a relay Walk-a-Thon in honor of their custodian, Vickie Garmon, who passed away in February. Each grade walked laps around the field, dressed in red and white and receiving tallies for each lap they walked (see video). Garmon served the school for over two decades, according to second grade teacher Syllen Hill. She often worked for the children behind the scenes, and was the point person for the school's 2013 Relay for Life Walk-a-Thon before she was diagnosed with cancer. The lung cancer had spread to multiple points in her body by the time she got the diagnosis, and she passed away only two weeks later. --Sign up for our free daily newsletter and stay up to date with all local news…

The BYOD or, Bring Your Own Device, pilot began this past fall, and some 14 schools are participating in the innovative classroom program.
This school year at least 14 schools in five district clusters are participating in a pilot program designed to enhance learning through the use of electronic devices. The "BYOD" pilot -- which stands for Bring Your Own Device -- is part of eCLASS, Gwinnett County's digital content, learning, assessment, and support system initiative. As part of the pilot, select schools will allow some students and teachers to use their personal devices to access the Internet in hopes of creating better learning. -- Do you think the "BYOD" pilot program is a good idea? Let us know in the comment section below. -- It's a way, the district says, to prepare for the time when all students will bring their own technology to class. In the meantime, the district…

Gwinnett County Public Schools announced today the names of 25 semifinalists in the running for the district's 2012 Teacher of the Year award. Their school colleagues nominated the teachers. A selection committee — made up of teachers, central office personnel, and administrators — will now consider the semifinalists’ applications and answers to a set of additional questions to determine six finalists. Committee members will then make site visits to the classrooms of the six finalists and conduct thorough interviews with each educator. …

Like students all over Gwinnett County, Snellville's Shiloh Elementary ushered in the Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of the summer by leaving school behind. These students also bid farewell to their retiring principal, Betty Ann Schoeneck.
Students at Shiloh Elementary in Snellville celebrated the last day of school with an outdoor picnic. School administration, teachers, students and their families gathered on the grassy lawn at the school to share a picnic lunch, dance to a live disc jockey's tunes and participate in a Shiloh Elementary tradition, the limbo. "When they go under the limbo stick, they're officially in the next grade up," said Principal Betty Ann Schoeneck. The fifth-grade students, who will move up to Shiloh Middle School in August, weren't the only ones saying goodbye at the picnic. Principal Schoeneck is retiring after serving as a principal in Gwinnett County since 1988. For her, the end-of-year celebration at the school was bittersweet. Amid the cheering…
