Here's our weekly call for submissions for Whiz Kids, Snellville. We are certain that you know a child wonder in your neighborhood. Perhaps, this child is high academic achiever, a sports powerhouse or caring volunteer. They could be a child who is overcoming exceptional challenges or who is creating works of art. This week's whiz kid is a student whose passion for school projects paves the road for her early success.
Name: Dominique Dixon Age: 14 School: Snellville Middle School Accomplishments: Exemplifying the role of one of Snellville Middle’s honor roll students, Dominique Dixon possess a unique brilliance and characteristics similar to that of a child prodigy. At the age of 14, she has all honors courses and remains the only student in her class to exceed the eighth-grade writing test by seven points, an achievement which was highly praised by her teachers and peers. Whiz Kid's Name: Erica Carswell Whiz Kid's Age: 18 Whiz Kid's School: Grayson High School Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Erica Carswell embodies the leadership and role model qualities of a humanitarian. Her schedule is quite busy during the day, attending Grayson High School and working a full-time job at the Best Buy in Snellville. However, her work beyond the classroom has garnered recognition from her peers and supervisors with multiple awards. Active in the community, Carswell serves volunteers in three organizations in Snellville and Lawrenceville; those include Diamonds in the Rough, Boys & Girls Club, and Sunrise Assisted Living at Webb Gin. Troop 582, which meets at St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church, and they are our Whiz Kids of the week.
Whiz Kid's Name: Troop 582 Whiz Kid's Age: Boys Ages 11 - 18 Whiz Kid's School: Troop 582 meets at St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church every Monday at 7 p.m., and they attend various schools in Snellville area. Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: The troop has collected food for the local Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, and they have raised money for charity by volunteering as workers at several car shows. The group has also painted several rooms and hallways at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The troop currently has 41 Boy Scouts, including 14 in their first year and 14 Life Scouts (the rank before Eagle). Katie's leadership on the court and off the court make her a notable for this week's Whiz Kid.
Whiz Kid's Name: Katie Mallow Whiz Kid's Age: 17 Whiz Kid's School: Brookwood High School Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: This year Katie, a 5-foot-9 shooting guard with the Lady Broncos, helped take her team to a wins at the Deep South Classic and the Region 8-AAAAA championship. She was also a lead scorer in the first-round of the state championship this year. As a junior, Katie showed prowess as a three-point shooter and helped lead her team to the state finals that year, as well. She will be graduating soon and heading to Appalachian State. Whiz Kid's Name: Jade Stonewall Whiz Kid's Age: 4 Whiz Kid's School: Preschool student at The Sunshine House Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: As the youngest of six children, Jade is making her mark on the family with her caring, helpful nature. She's got a sunny disposition that brings smiles to just about anyone. Millie Stonewall, Jade's mother, said her daughter likes to especially help care for three baby nephews. Jade is also on her way to being a good cook in the kitchen, as she loves imitating her family when they are whipping up a meal. "If she could help me at the stove, she would," Stonewall said. Not only does she do well in school, but also she makes time to volunteer her time to help pets and people. She consistently makes honor roll, is a Beta Club member, attended Emory University Summer Institute for the Gifted program and is a Duke University 'TIP' student. With a recent win at Run the Reagan, freshman Allie Myers shows she determined to excel.

Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: This Brookwood High freshman won first place in the recent Run the Reagan race for her age group (11-14). It was her first time running a 10K race. She also earned a varsity letter on her school's cross country, which placed second in the state championship. This spring Allie will also be running track.
