Moms Talk: Children Raised Genderless

One couple is causing an uproar in our gender-oriented society.

Today I came across an article on the Parenting website entitled Parents Keep Child’s Gender a Secret. At first glance, I assumed it was the typical act of keeping the gender of their child a secret until birth, but as I read further, I realized it was something altogether different.

The couple in the article are raising their children to banish social perception regarding gender in a way that is beyond seeking equality in both sexes. In their quest for "freeing their children from the bonds of gender norms," their male children like pink and purple, they sometimes wear dresses, and their oldest son likes to wear braids.

I'm not sure what I think about this, but I'm mulling it over and trying to remain open-minded. In our increasingly liberal society, I sometimes feel that certain good things are being too readily dismissed. As a woman, I enjoy femininity and wearing clothes designed with the female in mind, because it makes me feel pretty. Does it make me feel this way because society deems this appropriate, or do I naturally feel this way? Am I confused because I like a rugged manly type of man who looks sexy in a tux or blue jeans? I don't think so in either case, but I've been wrong before.

This week's question is for everyone--moms, dads, and society in general: Do you think it's acceptable to promote androgyny in our society by dismissing gender roles? Why or why not?
